Today see’s the unveiling of some new music from Canadian favorites Metric. They announced their new album Synthetica a while back, it’s got a June 12th release date.
‘Youth Without Youth’ is the first track to be released from the album, Emily Haines & Co. haven’t strayed too far off the beaten track, but it’s a punchy number that will have you hitting repeat. More than enough to keep fans occupied until the album release.
Forget The Song is the name of the first track in this doubled up SS, and ironically I did. I started this post last week and then got waylaid, but I got it back from the backroom of my mind and thought I’d share it, one week on, hence the reason you’re getting two tunes today.
I’ve had the pleasure of catching Dublin’s Ships twice recently. Once as they played support at Jape’s leaving gig and then again last week at an intimate little set in Pygmalion. I was mightily impressed on both occasions. They’re a three piece with a great late night sound. There’s an almost Kraftwerkian edge to their hypnotic sound, which is augmented by the subtle dual vocals of Simon and Sorca. They’ve got The Naked and Famous’ boy girl dynamic but the sound that surrounds it is of a more meaty variety than our Kiwi friends.
At both gigs the crowd were doing dancing! Not like the gig shuffle but proper dancing! Ships seem to have something that works well as a live (crowd all facing the band) gig, or as floor filling dance. If it’s something they’ve done on purpose it’s clever!
Below is their solo Souncloud effort to date Two Hearts, but there’s more to come from Ships very soon, they’ve got a double a-side coming, click here for details.

I’ve posted about Oxford band Jonquil already this year, when they released this beautiful video for their single ‘It’s My Part’, since then I’ve been listening a lot to their album Point of Go. It’s hard not to walk around with a giant smile on your face while listening to it. ‘Swells’ – the opening track on the album started off my day just right this morning, so I figure it’s pretty fitting for our Weekend Tunage slot. A gradual building pop song ending with life affirming trumpets is always good on a Friday, right?!
Here’s a sneaky peaky at a brand new Jessie Ware tune, 110%. The track title would suggest the song is about a post match interview with a footballer, but don’t worry it’s not. Saff Londoner Jessie is churning them out at the minute, this tune coming hot on the heels of Running which was only released a fortnight ago. She has a great sound and it throws me back to Club Classic’s era Soul II Soul and it makes me want summer now.

Just under 3 weeks ’til these Alabama cats shake The Academy 2, and I can’t wait! Singer Brittany Howard‘s voice is solid soul, but also shifting soul, from Aretha to James Brown to Janis Joplin.
Their just released debut Boys and Girls is going down a storm and their live shows are among the most talked about around right now. Here’s the title track Boys and Girls for you this Sunday morn.
It’s Friday the 13th and with this day comes a stressing out of superstitious types, which in turn makes people jumpy probably causing more accidents than other days of the year and that’s the reason people think it’s unlucky. So everybody needs to calm down. That’s why I’ve chosen to stick this track on today [...]
Check this tune, Song for Motion from Lowlakes. They hail from Alice Springs but are curiously described as geographically agnostic. I can see why that’s been said though because although I wasn’t expecting to hear ‘Waltzing Matilda’ there is something quite unbushlike about their sound. It’s an ambient and melodious meander through Anthony and The Johnsons territory rather than the Northern territory. See what you think, if you like, you can check out more…they’ve just released and EP! Merry Easter.
