The Weekend Tunage is a weird one. It’s a slot we take great pride in here at The Clink. The slot is aiming to get you ready for the weekend, something to get you fired up and pumped for your Friday night (and, if we can get it posted early enough in the day, make you forget that you’re in work). Sometimes it won’t be all bouncy and dancy, but it still aims to make you happy, such as O Emperor two weeks ago.
Not only that, but we like to post new music here, so the Weekend Tunage is supposed to be a tune that you may not have heard before. It could be a brand new release, or just from a band who might not be on your radar.
Naturally, there is pressure to pick the right tune that fills these criterion. And this week I was feeling that pressure. Justice were already featured last week, and it turns out that not every one’s a fan of that tune anyway. The Beastie Boys’ new one, while good, just didn’t cut it for me as a feel good tune. Polarsets would have been perfect, but in my excitement I already posted them this week. I have a few mellow tracks lined up for Sunday Supplement, so they can’t be used either.
So I scour. That’s what we music junkies do when looking for our next fix – we scour. Be it the web, magazines or the radio, you scour for the new track that hits the sweet spot. And… I couldn’t find it.
But, then I came to The Guardian, one of the usual stops on my scouring jaunts. One of their journalists, Paul Lester, likes to highlight a new band everyday – a tough task, as he pointed out yesterday. But he said two words that hit the sweet spot for me – Black Kids.
Granted, he was referencing them in a what the hell happened to them? kind of way, but still – 2008′s Partie Traumatic was one bouncing album. Packed with happy, dancy, smiley tunes. Perfect for a sunny Friday, perfect to get you happy, perfect for the weekend mood.
Interestingly Lester raises a good point – the band’s own website hasn’t had an update in 5 months, and that was just to announce that the bassist has released some new solo material. But Wikipedia, that fountain of knowledge, tells us that the band are writing material for a second album. We can trust Wikipedia, right?
So, without further ado, let’s get in the mood for the weekend – Happy Friday folks!
P.S. Nobody mention that I broke rule 2 here – to paraphrase Lesley Gore – its my blog and I’ll write what I want to.

Which Black Kids song did you choose? It doesn’t leave me watch the video cos I’m in Canada. Boo.
Was wondering too what ever happened these guys, saw them at Oxegen a few years back, such a fun band. Let’s hope wikipedia is right!!

Cheers Chris – I would never have made a link with The Cure, but now that you mention it, its definitely there.
Luo – went with I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You, here’s hoping for a few follow up tunes as good as that one!
